SRSL provides a complete hydrographic service including facility hire, supported hydrographic surveys, analysis and modeling along with the reporting of key water column characteristics. In addition SRSL is also developing its own in-house instrument development programme and will shortly be releasing turbulence profilers and autonomous lander CTD instrumentation.
HydrographyFlow characteristics, including current direction and speed (average, maximum, minimum and residuals) can be measured. Depending on customers requirements and location, a variety of current metering devices and methods are available:
- Acoustic Doppler current profilers
- Self recording current meters
- Wave measurements
- Tide measurements
- Drogue tracking
- Particulate dispersal tracking
Water body measurements are performed using both winch-deployed and hand-deployed instruments, providing vertical profiling for physical and chemical parameters:
- Temperature
- Salinity
- Chlorophyll
- Turbidity
- Nutrients
Bathymetry
Acoustic (sonar) mapping systems are used, which are linked with a Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) to enable accurate positioning, mapping and cataloguing of bathymetric features and sediment types. Acoustic mapping surveys can be performed in conjunction with ground truthing surveys to allow identification of physical and biological habitat areas of interest. Ground truthing may include flora and fauna determination, diving surveys, sediment analysis, and photographic/video analysis. Data management facilities including GIS- and cartographic applications are available for reporting purposes.
MeteorologyIn sheltered areas, wind conditions may have a greater effect on the water current regime than prevailing tidal conditions. Meteorological measurements are therefore provided alongside hydrographic measurements. These include:
- Wind direction.
- Wind speed.
- Temperature (land or water).
